SEGA acquires Amplitude Studios

We have just announced the sale of Amplitude Studios to SEGA.

SEGA Europe’s president/COO Jurgen Post commented:

To have the opportunity to add a studio with the growing reputation of Amplitude’s, to the SEGA family, is an exciting one and reinforces SEGA Europe’s position as a market leader in publishing high quality PC games.

Culturally, Amplitude are a fantastic fit for the business as they not only produce great games, but also have a proven track record in listening to their fans and directly involving them in the ongoing development of their games through their GAMES2GETHER system.

Our co-founder and CEO Mathieu Girard said:

Joining the SEGA family represents the culmination of five years of hard work from myself and Romain and everyone here at Amplitude Studios. For the Endless series to be alongside PC franchises with such heritage as Total War and Dawn of War in the SEGA Europe stable puts our games where we feel they deserve to be. We look forward to leveraging SEGA Europe’s expertise in the PC market to take the Endless series to the next level.

Amplitude Studios co-founder Romain de Waubert added:

Of course you could wonder, “Why Sega?” If you were to ask just Mathieu and I, we could easily answer with the words “Creative Assembly and Relic!” because we are HUGE fans of their games. The opportunity to join them is incredible for us, a real dream come true.

But the bigger reason why we wanted to join SEGA was how they treat their internal studios. Often, studios are controlled by a central department that dictates what games they should do, and how and when. But SEGA is a company that offers its support to the creators, positioning itself as a service provider, helping studios to reach their goals with only one objective in mind: Quality!

Now is the time to look back at the Amplitude story.

What began for me as a ten minutes pitch at Telecom ParisTech in the spring of 2011 has grown into a formidable fifty-four-person video game studio, one of the most interesting European developers.

Mathieu Girard and Romain de Waubert, it has been an honor and a privilege working with you. As we look toward our next endless adventures, I raise my glass to you, dear friends.

A brief history of video game graphics

I am not a gamer.

Metaphorically speaking, my arrival in the video game industry resembled the visit to Earth of Micromégas and his companion from Saturn in Voltaire’s tale of the same name. I was an outsider. But since I became an investor and board member of Amplitude Studios — and an active member of its community, reading all the threads (19,000), posts (195,000) and comments written on the forum by any of the other (96,500) members — I have become more and more interested in the aesthetics of game art and game design.

Therefore, I was impressed by a beautifully made series of five videos from Ahoy tackling the history of video game graphics, described by Polygon‘s Colin Campbell as “a smart and informative documentary and a pleasant walk down memory lane”. Each video focusses on a specific period of innovation (the dawn of video game graphics, the development of sprite graphic technology, the forging of a polygon realm, the 3D acceleration and bloom in realistic graphics, and the future of graphics). The first video tackles the seventies. In forty years, the video game industry has become — froan economic standpoint, and with a growth far exceeding — as relevant as the motion picture industry.

In this context, I am proud to assist Amplitude Studios’ co-founders & entrepreneurs extraordinaire Mathieu Girard and Romain de Waubert, and to be involved in the growth of their organization.

Amplitude Studios’ Endless Legend : The Artistic Direction

There is so much I would like to say two weeks after the release of Endless Legend,  Amplitude Studios’ new video game. For the moment, I’ll just copy and paste a few of the critics’ comments on the art of the game, and link two YouTube videos on our artistic direction, aesthetic and music.

Endless Legend is a 4x strategy title that’s frustratingly close to being sublime.
Peter Parrish – IncGamers – 22 Sep 2014

Endless Legend is lush. Simply put, it’s one of the best-looking turn-based strategy games I’ve ever seen. The graphical style is both dense and pleasantly abstract, from the closest zoom, to the full-map view. Its science-fantasy setting has a pleasant amount of lore, both magical and futuristic.
Rowan Kaiser – IGN – 23 Sep 2014

Cities are built, wars are declared, worlds are conquered – but Amplitude has created something that stands out; a game that is gorgeous with a world that begs to be explored. It is fat with novel ideas, from its peculiar tactical combat, to its fascinating factions.
Fraser Brown – PCGamesN – 26 Sep 2014

It’s a fine marker of intent from Amplitude, who have been quietly tinkering with the fundamental mechanics and world-building of strategy since Endless Space’s arrival. Legend feels like an experiment, and it’s a supremely confident and engaging one that doesn’t quite fit pre-existing templates. It’s a 4x game, sure, but it’s a not a high or low fantasy one. It’s weird fantasy and the weird cuts through to the playstyles as well as the art and fiction.
Adam Smith – Rock, Paper, Shotgun – 1 Oct 2014

I found the first 140s of the following video from Amplitude’s Narrative Director & Lead Writer (and fellow board member) Jeff Spock especially interesting:

And of course the music:

Whenever you see a successful business, someone once made a courageous decision. Peter Drucker

Laurent

* Comme Cléopâtre, vous avez eu du nez.

Our first game Endless Space, a science fictional 4X strategy game, has been critically acclaimed since its release in July 2012. An international success with over half a million copies sold, Endless Space has won the much coveted Unity Awards at Unite 2013 in Vancouver (both the Golden Cube for Best Overall Game and the Community Choice Award). Our second game, Dungeon of the Endless, a retro-styled game, mixing 2D pixel art with 3D graphics, was released in early access on Steam last December. 10012043_262057897310079_4166962638113337588_o

Amplitude Studios Endless Legend

I can’t resist the pleasure of revealing some info on our upcoming game Endless Legend. Yesterday night in our studios in Paris, we had three volunteers who had submitted their applications for an Endless Legend play test. They came from the US, Poland and Ireland, to get the painful task of testing the pre-alpha version on behalf of our gamers community. We then had a few beers with the dev team and many friends, and shared the excitement of the very last stages of an 18-month process.

So it’s time for us to introduce the Vaulters, one of the game major factions.

It is a time of change for the Vaulters.

For countless generations they lived as loosely-federated clans in the vast underground labyrinths that riddle Auriga. Their skills in mining and crafting made them comfortable, and their study of ancient artefacts slowly unlocked the secrets of their world’s past. Though their origins were lost in legends and myth, they had found peace and prosperity in the deep places of the planet.

Suddenly, now, the Vaulters have been forced to abandon those ancient halls. The Great Quake broke walls and ruined roads and bridges; as their towns crumbled around them they fled to the surface. Some turn for answers to the priests in the Church of the Great Orrery, others look to their leader, Szabad Ilona, First of the Bloodline. For a people deeply bound by tradition and unused to change, the surface of Auriga is a frightening place.

Torn between the secrets of the planet, their own traditions, and their need to survive, the Vaulters may struggle. But they will not fade, or surrender.
