Amplitude Studios are unleashing the Guardians today

Four years ago nearly to this day I met two authentic entrepreneurs, Mathieu Girard and Romain de Waubert, who were looking to finance their video game venture, Amplitude Studios. What began for me as a ten minutes pitch at Telecom ParisTech in the spring of 2011 has now grown into a formidable forty-person video game studio.

When Amplitude were the studio that had made Endless Space, they were notable. Now that they have both Endless Legend and Dungeon Of The Endless chalked up on their scoreboard, well, they’re an enormously important developer. Amplitude have to now be regarded as one of the most interesting (and potentially one of the most important) European developers. RockPaperShotgun – December 24, 2014

Our last game Endless Legend has now sold well over 400,000 copies, and my personal bet is we’ll reach over a million copies at some point. And today we are officially unleashing the Endless Legend expansion: Guardians. The great game Civilization® may have found a worthy competitor. Endless Legend: Guardians

I once said that Amplitude was a diamond in the rough. Well, not so rough anymore. A gem, actually. A thing of beauty, an outstanding team of good people. I love them. As we look toward our next four years and countless endless adventures, I raise my glass to you, dear friends.

Happy birthday Amplitude Studios!

Now is the time to look back, and think about the future.

Media and the video game industry: the story of Polygon

At L.T. Sachs, we are not gamers. We don’t write code, we don’t design games. But we know a thing or two about media, pop culture and growth.

Since we became an investor and board member of Amplitude Studios — and an active member of its community, reading all the threads written on its 100,000-members forum, and pretty much everything else written about Amplitude — we grew into meta-experts of the video game industry, and daily readers of Polygon.

Polygon was founded in 2012 in partnership with Vox Media, around the same time as Amplitude Studios’ first game Endless Space was released. Polygon covers games, artists, fans, technologies and the gaming culture. It delivers fast, comprehensive news as well as in-depth feature stories. And most importantly, it has a tone, collecting some of the best writing about video games.

We were thoroughly interested by Press Reset, a beautifully made documentary series of thirteen short videos telling the story of building Polygon: the technology, the business, the website. According to Stephen Greenwood, director of Press Reset:

When the idea of making a series that would eventually become Press Reset was brought to me, I saw it as a unique opportunity to witness the birth of a new thing from the inside. Today, we have the luxury of interacting with products and services without having to consider where they come from, or be aware of the inspiration, creativity and compromises that shaped those things we enjoy. Yet now, more than ever, we see ideas springing up across the world and get to assist in the funding or providing feedback that will eventually bring those ideas to life.

Rarely do we get a chance to see the in-between: The late nights; the frustration; teams working together from remote locations; features that didn’t make the cut; last-minute changes; near-derailment; minor victories.

With Press Reset, we get that chance. The Polygon team is working to build what they hope will be a big, new thing. They’re coming from different backgrounds, with different philosophies and different areas of expertise, but they all share one thing: the desire to start with a blank page and make something. Press Reset will be the record of their experiment. (…) We want to show the iterations and decisions being made about an unfinished product in near real-time; to study where games journalism has come from and where it has the potential to go; to talk to the designers, developers, sales team, advertisers, and writers that are ultimately responsible for Polygon’s future success or failure.

Polygon’s videos show the process of building something new, the frustrations, the exhilaration, the successes (the move into a new office building!), the organization and the chaos that come with creativity — what  Rita J. King calls “all the tedious little steps that take an idea from imagination to reality”. Amplitude Studios has lived through the same process over the last three years.

The stakes are high:

Which brings us to today, a time of shift. Fast blogs creating more original material. Gargantuan networks that are breaking news. Magazines testing their hands online and in apps. Everyone learning from each other. Game Writing is stronger than ever, and games are covered in almost every conceivable way. There’s no shortage when it comes to information about games. Major gaming sites get tens of millions of hits a month. Gaming grows every year. More gamers, more success, more influence. The stakes have never been higher…

Endless Space has won the Golden Cube for Best Game at Unite 2013

The winners of the much coveted Unity Awards have been announced yesterday night at Unite 2013 in Vancouver. Endless Space has won both the Golden Cube for Best Overall Game and the Community Choice Award.

Unity Technologies is the creator of Unity, a flexible and high-performance development platform used to make creative and intelligent interactive 3D and 2D experiences. Unity Technologies boasts a thriving community of 2 million developers including large publishers, indie studios, students and hobbyists.

To our greatest happiness our first game Endless Space, a science fictional 4X strategy game, has been critically acclaimed since its release in July 2012. Working closely with players to share, discuss or compare ideas, we always wanted to bring the idea of community one step further with GAMES2GETHER , a new way for players around the world to participate in the creation of a video game!

In an endlessly continuing process, we announced last week at Gamescom our upcoming new game, Endless Legend. Amplitude Studios’ new fantasy 4X game is due out in alpha by the end of the year and slotted for a Spring 2014 release. I cannot resist the pleasure of showing off a preview of the beautiful artwork of Endless Legend :

And here are a few bonus screenshots (pre pre alpha rendering, there is some much more coming !) :

A love story between a concept and a bunch of drunk designers

Dungeon of the Endless, Amplitude Studios’ new retro-styled game, mixing 2D pixel art with 3D graphics, is due out in alpha by the end of the year.

On the forum of Amplitude (65,000 members), my partner Romain de Waubert, co-founder of Amplitude Studios with Mathieu Girard, reveals the story behind the game: “That game was never planned, it was just a love story between a concept and a bunch of drunk designers. […] After spending secretly the whole week-end on it , we already had a game design overview and a prototype when we were back on Monday. We presented that to [the CEO] AmpliMath who loved it right away, and although it was not planned at all, he agreed to hire some very talented guys to help us do it. Never in my life have I had the chance to have a game in full production in such short notice after the original idea.”

The original goal of that project was to do something fun and refreshing for us. We expanded far beyond our original pitch. More to come on this endless enterprise !

Amplitude Studios announces two new games and celebrates 500,000 Endless Space units sold

Endless Space, our hugely popular 4x space strategy game launched on Steam in July 2012, selling around half a million units while garnering critical acclaim. Since the 2012 release, Amplitude Studio has not only worked on expanding Endless Space with 4 free add-ons and an official expansion, but has also worked on new games set within the Endless universe. A reveal trailer for Dungeon of the Endless teasing a new, retro-styled game landed earlier this month.

A few days ago at Gamescom, Amplitude Studios revealed it’s also developing our largest scale project to date: Endless Legend, a new 4X strategy game. As the titles suggests, Endless Legend is part of the universe spawned by Endless SpaceEndless Legend is a civilization fantasy game. “Creating a fantasy 4X game was a dream for all of us at Amplitude. The success of Endless Space and the support of our community have allowed to make this dream come true”, comments Mathieu Girard, CEO of Amplitude Studios.“ With respect towards great games released before us, we intend to set a new benchmark in creating a rich, immersive, thrilling, and accessible 4X strategy game in a new fantasy setting”, he adds.

Both Dungeon of the Endless and Endless Legend are due out in alpha by the end of the year and Endless Legend is slotted for a Spring 2014 release.
